ENID—Ready to putt around this summer?
4RKids Mini Golf is a miniature golf option in the Enid area aside from Meadowlake Park; local golf courses in Enid include Oakwood, Pheasant Run, and Meadowlake.
Get your practice on for your golf game or just go to have fun with friends and family at 4RKids Mini Golf.
4RKids Foundation Inc., which strives to give adults with developmental disabilities meaningful opportunities to work, originally acquired the Putt-Putt Golf franchise in 2007 to provide jobs in lawn maintenance, ticket sales, and concessions.
According to 4RKids executive director Rachel McVay, that was the first building established under the 4RKids brand and the first time the Enid community committed to supporting the 4RKids enterprise.
Two years later, the foundation opened The 2nd Story Employment Center, which evolved into the gift shop housed with the mini golf concession stand.
By 2017, 4RKids decided to break from Putt-Putt Golf and renamed the two 9-hole miniature golf courses as 4RKids Mini Golf.
The course got a facelift in 2018. The putt-putt version was torn out and the miniature golf version was built from scratch in its place, combining the two 9-holes into an 18-hole that was wheelchair accessible.
The remodel included waterfalls, bridges, and brand-new turf with some of the holes rated for par (the baseline number of strokes an expert golfer is expected to need to complete a specific hole), allowing avid golfers to indeed practice putting at 4RKids Mini Golf, McVay said.
Clients with 4RKids perform all the tasks there such as running the cash register, cleaning the facilities, assisting customers, and maintaining the course.
Expanding work and play
4RKids Mini Golf and the adjoining 2nd Story Gift Shop now stand in the shadow of the main vocational building which was constructed following the capital campaign with groundbreaking in 2019.
This meant 4RKids could expand both its vocational opportunities and workforce instead of the clients being crammed into the backside of the mini golf building, McVay said.
4RKids businesses now include dog treats through 4RPups (originally birthed through Autry Technology Center’s business incubator), t-shirts through 4RDesigns, and freeze-dried candy through 4RFreeze.
The main vocational building has spacious work rooms, a commercial kitchen and a factory-style line for 4RPups, hot presses and computers for 4RDesigns, along with the foundation offices and reception area. There is a covered breezeway for parties nestled between the main building and the mini golf course. Down the street is 4RKids Shredding and Recycling Center which securely shreds documents then recycles all the paper.
All proceeds made from all of the businesses benefit 4RKids Foundation.
Connecting for fun
At 4RKids Mini Golf, there is something for everyone.
Cost per person per round of golf is $7; price lowers the more people in a group. An annual pass is also offered so people can play as much as they want throughout the year.
Several specials run through the summer as well including $2 Tuesdays and free popcorn with the round on Fridays. Spend the evening of July 11 golfing with glow-in-the-dark balls or come back for the diamond dig on the course in August. Watch for details about both events and more on the 4RKids’ Facebook page or website.
One of the upgrades coming soon at 4RKids Mini Golf is golfers no longer need to record their golf scores with pencil and paper, McVay said. There will be a QR code that players can scan with their smartphones to fill out their scores online to track their game.
For those wanting to stay out of the sun, there are numerous other possibilities for socializing at 4RKids Mini Golf. Patrons can play classic board and card games, stop at the stuffing station (which is like Build-A-Bear and half-price on Thursdays), eat sno-cones or pizza in the Snak Shak, hang out in the covered breezeway, or even shop the 2nd Story Gift Shop.
4RKids Mini Golf, 710 Overland Trail, Enid, is open daily for the summer from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 1-9 p.m. Sunday. Hours will adjust once school is back in session. Call (580) 237-7888 or go online to 4rkids.com. Follow on Facebook @4RKids.
