Cherokee is located on U.S. Hwy 64 (also State Hwys 8 and 58). Prior to the Land Run of 1893, Cherokee was cattle pasture in Woods County, Oklahoma Territory. The town was platted in 1901 and became the county seat of Alfalfa County in 1907.
